Class 2010 July 14 : Potions, Wards & Discovery

(1 post)
  1. Faith Diesel | July 14, 2010 - 11:48 PM

[14:02] Faith Diesel: ok - this is meant to be part two - how many have already done part 1?
    [14:03] Kael pets the fox
    [14:03] Roarshack Zeplin: not me
    [14:03] Tindle Zepp: nope...
    [14:03] Faith Diesel: fox has
    [14:03] Roarshack Zeplin: Mas?
[14:03] Faith Diesel: mas did you do part 1?
[14:04] Faith Diesel: and would you both mind sitting through part 1 again?
[14:04] Mas Sohl: Yes,I did,but I can hear it again,am not opposed to it.
[14:04] Faith Diesel: up to you fox?
[14:04] Fox Onizuka: not really no. pounces the Faith and buries her in fur.
    [14:04] Tindle Zepp giggles softly
[14:05] Faith Diesel: spanks the fox - not now im teaching
    [14:05] Roarshack Zeplin: omg
    [14:05] Roarshack Zeplin: lool
[14:05] Faith Diesel: kk - we start at beginning
    [14:06] Tindle Zepp: kk
[14:06] Roarshack Zeplin: winks at tindle
[14:06] Faith Diesel: This class is in two parts otherwise it does not give enough time for you to ask questions. Today I am giving Potions, Wards & Discovery Part 1.
[14:06] Faith Diesel: I have included moments in the session when you can ask questions about what is being discussed. Please ask questions at those moments or if they are off subject save them to the end.
    [14:07] Tindle Zepp: oki
[14:07] Faith Diesel: i say this cos its a lot to get through
[14:07] Faith Diesel: You might be wondering why potions, discovery & wards are all lumped together in this class.
[14:08] Roarshack Zeplin: gawd nc this i gtg for 40 min
    [14:08] Faith Diesel: tc roar
    [14:08] Tindle Zepp: byes Roar
[14:08] Faith Diesel: This is because they all require a ST, both to set up and for the future storyline. Because they either affect the environment after the perpetrator has left the scene or in the case of the potion, may be used when the creator is not around.
    [14:09] Tindle Zepp: k
[14:09] Faith Diesel: OK in order to do potions, discovery & wards you need to be able to dice roll
[14:10] Faith Diesel: The easiest and first place to look for a diceroll is in your abilities in the hud. You could use /9poisonthem for example as a way of making a harmful potion.
[14:10] Faith Diesel: There are also three other main dice rolls
[14:11] Faith Diesel: PvE, PvT & PvA
[14:11] Faith Diesel: PvE = Player vs Environment (physical where there is nothing to target), PvT = Player vs Target (physical where there is a character or NPC to target) & PvA = Player vs Ability (Magic or learned ability, target where possible)
[14:12] Faith Diesel: Note that currently all uses of PvA require an ST to be present
    [14:12] Tindle Zepp: ㋡
    [14:12] Tindle Zepp: heya Ed
[14:12] Faith Diesel: and should not be used to incure immediate physical harm
[14:13] Faith Diesel: You should use the hud abilities or PvT for that.
    [14:13] Tindle Zepp: ok
[14:13] Faith Diesel: PvA is only for abilities that are not currently available in the HUD
[14:14] Faith Diesel: These then are the main dice rolls and all you really need to use now with the exception of durations & quantity rolls
[14:14] Faith Diesel: We use d10, d6 & d4 for duration and quantity rolls; the number depending on the outcome of the main dice roll.
[14:15] Faith Diesel: For information about dice rolls see the following links:
    http://larps.net/lc/forum/support
    http://legacies1891.com/community/forum.php?id=4
[14:17] Faith Diesel: In addition to dice rolls you need to have worked out your character. Their abilities, weaknesses and how that character would make a potion. Not all would rp it as magic in the way a fae would
[14:18] Faith Diesel: Have you all been to a character development class and/or made a character sheet stating your characters abilities and weaknesses?
[14:18] Faith Diesel: It is worth doing this as it helps you know in any given situation how your character might react.
[14:18] Tindle Zepp: yes i've made my character sheet
[14:18] Tindle Zepp: but not been to the class yet
[14:18] Faith Diesel: grins good for you
[14:19] Faith Diesel: I play a fae called Fate. Fae strength: Faes have ‘glamour’ - are naturally magical creatures. Other characteristic: Mischievous - like playing practical jokes.
[14:19] Fox Onizuka: when in doubt, look cute and cuddly. cute...and cuddly.
[14:19] Faith Diesel: beats fox for the hell of it
    [14:19] Tindle Zepp: hehe
[14:19] Faith Diesel: Any questions before we move on?
[14:20] Tindle Zepp: awwww erm... nope
[14:20] Tindle Zepp: following so far
[14:20] Faith Diesel: thats the background done - now lets talk about potions
[14:20] Faith Diesel: Let me give you some examples of Fate’s potions. She has made in the past: Devil’s cherry syrup (poison), Floppy & Busy biscuits (one made people hyper the other like a rag doll), Memory retrieving potion.
[14:21] Faith Diesel: She has made lots more but that just to give you ideas
[14:21] Faith Diesel: You can make anything you want within reason
[14:22] Faith Diesel: just let imagination run riot
[14:22] Faith Diesel: Let’s have a go at making Floppy biscuits.
[14:22] Fox Onizuka: careful, never know where my imagination might go.
[14:22] Faith Diesel: it really scares me Fox!
    [14:22] Tindle Zepp: hehe
[14:22] Ed Floresby: whats the letters to find my hud
[14:23] Faith Diesel: Ed ask me after class
[14:23] Faith Diesel: Fates potions/enchantments tend to be about mischief, though she also make things for other people to order. What you make and how you do it depends on your character, your rp.
[14:23] Ed Floresby: then i cant put it on
[14:24] Faith Diesel: you dont need it just at the moment
[14:24] Ed Floresby: im having a problem w/inventory today SL is messing w/it
[14:24] Faith Diesel: I have just put together a nc for people to fill out if they want to make a potion or enchant an object. Attempts to pass round the nc.
[14:24] Faith Diesel: where did i put it
[14:25] Tindle Zepp accepted your inventory offer.
[14:25] Ed Floresby accepted your inventory offer.
[14:25] Tindle Zepp: bare success that would be like if it almost worked but not quite...
[14:25] Faith Diesel: fox get out of my crotch and i will give you a nc
[14:26] Mas Sohl accepted your inventory offer.
[14:26] Faith Diesel: did everyone get one
[14:26] Faith Diesel: apart from fox
[14:27] Faith Diesel: who already has one
[14:27] Fox Onizuka: I have one from last time
    [14:27] Mas Sohl nods"Got it."
[14:27] Faith Diesel: You can keep this in your inventory and use it when you wish to make one. I tend to do this in advance of the rp so the rp flows much faster.
[14:27] Faith Diesel: There are 2 parts to a potion rp: The making & the using.
[14:28] Faith Diesel: I have put the using information at the top of the card because this is what the ST needs note-carded to add to the database for when someone uses the potion. Questions 1-2.
[14:29] Faith Diesel: Questions 3 & 4 are optional. 3 is all about the dice roll outcomes for the user
[14:29] Faith Diesel: & 4 which is all about the potion making rp.
[14:31] Faith Diesel: You can leave the dice roll outcomes to the ST but some people including me like to think up what happens to the potion victim with each dice roll outcome
    [14:31] Faith Diesel: Any questions?
[14:31] Tindle Zepp: saving till last
[14:32] Faith Diesel: go ahead Tindle
    [14:32] Faith Diesel: no questions?
[14:32] Tindle Zepp: keep going i have a little RL distraction through this lol
    [14:33] Faith Diesel: kk
[14:33] Faith Diesel: The first thing you might want to fill in is Qn 1: What does the potion/enchanted object do?
[14:33] Faith Diesel: This is what I wrote for the biscuits
[14:33] Faith Diesel: The basic biscuit recipe is as written down by Claysin's grandma. But Fate remembers this recipe fondly as one she herself had cooked as a child in Arden with a rather more colourful use. Claysin admits this recipe is from a fae prince.
    - Claysins granny's version - calming slightly due to lavender/lilac natural properties (ie not magical)
    - Fate's version - relaxes all the eater’s muscles for the duration dice rolled. Making them all floppy like a rag doll. (magical)
    [14:34] Mas Sohl: mmmm discobiscuits
[14:34] Faith Diesel: giggles - these were the floppy ones
[14:34] Fox Onizuka: even loosens the muscles holding in the stool
    [14:35] Faith Diesel: yuck
    [14:35] Tindle Zepp: eep
[14:35] Faith Diesel: This was based on the rp I did with Claysin about his grandmother’s biscuits. He was feeling homesick and wanted something to remind him of home. Fate of course had other ideas about what Claysin needed (fae mischief).
[14:35] Faith Diesel: So use previous appropriate rp. And think about how your character would react.
    [14:36] Faith Diesel: Any questions?
    [14:36] Tindle Zepp: ok
    [14:36] Tindle Zepp: nope
[14:36] Faith Diesel: Next I tend to look at Qn 2 & 4 together. One informs the other.
[14:36] Faith Diesel: 2. What does it look, smell, sound, feel, taste like?
(This so the user can rp the potion/enchanted object correctly)

    - A small bag of small round shortbread looking biscuits about 1.5" in diameter.
You can see the odd blue/purple hint of the lavender & lilac petals.
    - They taste slightly floral & of lavender in addition to biscuity.
    - Smell of lavender & lilac
    - Crunchy & crumbly
[14:37] Faith Diesel: 4. How to make the potion/enchantment
(Dice rolls required to be added by ST).
    • Ingredients - (What is it made of)
Flour, eggs, sugar and butter plus lavender & lilac flowers.
    • Method - (How is it made of)
Mix the ingredients together and chant the spell over the mixture.
    • Spell or incantation - (here incl. language used & words in English)
Spell in fae: Cookies crisp and crumbly make person stumbly
[14:38] Faith Diesel: Remember to include in Qn 2 everything the user would find helpful when rping eating your biscuits or drinking your potion. All the appropriate senses. Also you need to source your ingredients and use ones appropriate for your character.
[14:38] Faith Diesel: i use the internet and reference books a lot to get information and ideas
[14:39] Faith Diesel: Fate uses little rhyming phrases as spells in fae for the incantation.
[14:39] Faith Diesel: but Fox for example does it in a very different way
[14:40] Faith Diesel: which suits his character
[14:41] Faith Diesel: though he could flesh it out a bit to help the poor ST
[14:41] Faith Diesel: Back to cookies. This is a mischief spell so quite like-hearted. If it was something more serious like memory retrieval, I would make the incantation sound darker.
[14:41] Faith Diesel: If you use your race language be sure to use /22 because then the ST will get the translation. For an ST to storytell well, they need to know exactly how you word things. You may be asked to put the translation in the ST im as it often gets lagged out.
[14:42] Fox Onizuka: for those of you who like to sound barbaric/easterislandish when casting here is a vocabulary link: http://www.sacred-texts.com/pac/ei/ei62.htm
[14:42] Faith Diesel: if you use a language other than using /22 - remember to include an english translation
[14:43] Faith Diesel: To roleplay the potion/enchanted object making have your nc filled out. Call an ST in ooc chat and either hand over the nc or post it in the ST im/conference.
[14:44] Faith Diesel: The ST will ask you to rp the potion/enchanted object making attempt then diceroll.
[14:44] Faith Diesel: The ST will then narrate the outcome and your character can react to the outcome & finish up their rp as they wish.
    [14:44] Faith Diesel: Any questions?
[14:45] Mas Sohl: Not from I
    [14:45] Tindle Zepp: nope
[14:45] Faith Diesel: so you can cast spells using the hud abilities
[14:46] Faith Diesel: but they are immediate
[14:46] Faith Diesel: you dont have to fill out one of these ncs
[14:46] Faith Diesel: you can jsut talk it through with the ST
[14:47] Faith Diesel: but i like to research my potions in advance so i can concentrate on the rp and not the information for the potion user that the ST needs to record
[14:48] Faith Diesel: and you have access to more information to draw from
[14:48] Faith Diesel: In Part 2 we will go through the dice rolls. How they are decided and how to fill out Qn 3.
[14:49] Faith Diesel: Let me hand out XP.
[14:49] Faith Diesel: Now I could go straight on and do part 2
    [14:49] Fox Onizuka: pass
[14:49] Faith Diesel: if you would like
    [14:49] Tindle Zepp: woot
[14:49] Faith Diesel: it will take about 45mins an hour
[14:50] Tindle Zepp is ready to go
[14:50] Fox Onizuka: always ready. ececpt for when Im not.
[14:50] Fate: ((Pharzuph is given 1000 experience points.))
[14:50] Faith Diesel: you want xp Mas?
    [14:50] Tindle Zepp: ㋡
[14:50] Tindle Zepp: thanks so much Faith
    [14:51] Mas Sohl shrugs
[14:51] Faith Diesel: giggles at the big tentacly teddy
    [14:51] Mas Sohl: Nah
    [14:51] Mas Sohl chuckles
[14:51] Faith Diesel: Ignore them tindle
[14:52] Tindle Zepp: awww but why?
[14:52] Faith Diesel: they have very strange ideas about xp
    [14:52] Tindle Zepp: oh
[14:52] Faith Diesel: however much i try tell them otherwise
[14:52] Faith Diesel: ok ready for part 2
    [14:53] Tindle Zepp: ready
    [14:53] Mas Sohl: sure
[14:53] Faith Diesel: Let me re- cap. In Part 1 we filled in an nc to give to the ST (all but Qn.3). Hands out the Floppy biscuit nc.
[14:54] Tindle Zepp accepted your inventory offer.
[14:54] Mas Sohl accepted your inventory offer.
[14:55] Faith Diesel: Everyone got the nc?
    [14:55] Mas Sohl: Yes
[14:55] Fox Onizuka accepted your inventory offer.
    [14:55] Tindle Zepp: yes
[14:55] Faith Diesel: You CAN poison or curse someone just by using the HUD (/9PoisonThem & /9CurseThem). No ST required, just do it yourself and if you target the correct resist is built in
[14:55] Faith Diesel: You DONT have to fill in this notecard to create a potion/enchant an object. It is only there if you want to think out your potion in advance to minimise the time in IM during the creation rp.
[14:56] Faith Diesel: You DO have to call an ST to make a potion/enchant an object which is going to be used by a character in your absence.
[14:56] Faith Diesel: Let’s assume for this example though that Fate is rping making these biscuits. I called an ST in OOC group chat. I posted my nc in the ST im and I answered the ST’s questions. The ST asked me to attempt to make the biscuits then to dice roll:
[14:57] Faith Diesel: [14:21] Fate of Arden picks up her ingredients from the table: flour eggs sugar and butter and makes a simple biscuit dough them she splits the dough into two halves mixing one with lavender and Lilac and putting the other half aside for the moment. As she mixes she chants a spell in fae.....
[14:57] Faith Diesel: [14:21] LaRPS HUD v0.25 RC - Dark Style: :::: Faith Diesel :::: Cookies crisp and crumbly make person stumbly
[14:21] Fate of Arden: ((in Faerie)): ad sens see ad reti airle ad
[14:58] Faith Diesel: The ST then asked me to dice roll. All potions are PvA. The choice is then Novice, Skilled, Expert & Legendary.
[14:58] Faith Diesel: I immediately discounted Expert and Legendary. It would be like a sledgehammer to crack a nut. Too much power for such a simple spell.
[14:59] Faith Diesel: The biscuits will affect a human sized person but just accentuating the natural characteristics of the ingredients. The human size pushes me towards skilled and the spell itself seems to me on the cusp between novice and skilled. I go for skilled as that is the highest of the two options.
[15:00] Faith Diesel: If you are saying your spell in your race tongue remember to use /22
[15:00] Faith Diesel: any questions so far?
    [15:00] Tindle Zepp: no
[15:01] Faith Diesel: let me post the results of the dice roll
[15:01] Faith Diesel: [14:22] Fate fails to perform the skilled ability.
    [14:22] LaRPS Sentinel: AdminMessage: Owner Faith Diesel :: Fate :: Msg:::::SKILLED ABILITY ROLL : Rolled 10 needed 12+ ))
[15:01] Faith Diesel: Then the ST posted this:
[15:01] Faith Diesel: [14:24] [Fate is so distracted by the spell she knocks the batter over, it splatters onto the ground and is useless.]
[15:02] Faith Diesel: I posted this in reaction
[15:02] Faith Diesel: [14:24] [Fate is so distracted by the spell she knocks the batter over, it splatters onto the ground and is useless.]
    [15:02] Faith Diesel: oops
[15:02] Faith Diesel: [14:27] Fate of Arden curses and throws away the ruined half of the her biscuits and begins to mix the second half of the dough with honey and shreaded daisies. She chants this time taking her time to pronounce the words carefully....
[15:02] Faith Diesel: thats what i posted
[15:03] Faith Diesel: You see that Fate fails to enchant these biscuits this time.
[15:03] Faith Diesel: If she had succeeded the dice roll would look more like this:
[14:22] Fate successfully performs the skilled ability.
    [14:22] LaRPS Sentinel: AdminMessage: Owner Faith Diesel :: Fate :: Msg:::::SKILLED ABILITY ROLL : Rolled 18 needed 12+ ))
    [15:04] Faith Diesel: any questions
    [15:04] Tindle Zepp: nope
[15:04] Faith Diesel: you dont see the admin message just the success or failure
[15:05] Faith Diesel: we get the numbers so we can see how good or bad the success or failure was
[15:05] Faith Diesel: it helps us ST
[15:06] Faith Diesel: The ST would then ask me in IM is I want a single or multiple portions of the biscuits or if I want to limit them by duration. In this case Fate wants to make a small bag of biscuits so she needs to do a quantity roll. The ST would then tell me to roll a d6 (in this case):
[14:24] Fate: ((Faith Diesel rolls a d6. Result is 5))
[15:06] Faith Diesel: So there are 3 options: single use potion/enchantment (no secondary diceroll), multiple portions (quantity secondary diceroll) or time limit (duration secondary diceroll)
    [15:07] Faith Diesel: Any questions?
[15:07] Faith Diesel: you are all very quiet
[15:07] Mas Sohl shakes his head
    [15:07] Mas Sohl: We listening
[15:07] Faith Diesel: are you all asleep?
[15:07] Tindle Zepp: paying close attention
    [15:07] Faith Diesel: giggles ty
[15:07] Mas Sohl: One listens with the ears, not the mouths
    [15:07] Mas Sohl: *Mouth
[15:08] Faith Diesel: Now Fate has made her biscuits and she hands them over to her client.
[15:08] Faith Diesel: how you use your made potions or objects is up to you
[15:09] Faith Diesel: i am an apothecary so i sell mine generally
[15:09] Faith Diesel: In this case I gave Claysin the notecard which said what the biscuits did Qn 1, how to rp the appearance of biscuits Qn 2. & what to do if someone wanted to eat a biscuit Qn 3.
[15:09] Faith Diesel: These can be edited to suit the extent of the information you want a player to know. For instance you might want to hide both what the potion does & the outcomes of the dice rolls and only give these to the ST.
[15:10] Faith Diesel: I could have used a prop (which I do sometimes) with a notecard & notegiver script in it.
[15:10] Faith Diesel: want to see a recent prop i used in Ravyns lair for a party
    [15:11] Mas Sohl: Sure
    [15:11] Tindle Zepp: yea
[15:11] Faith Diesel: its not brilliiant - just enough to suit the rp
[15:12] Faith Diesel: giggles - think i lost one
[15:12] Fox Onizuka accepted your inventory offer.
    [15:12] Tindle Zepp looks around
[15:13] Mas Sohl: OH...I recall hearing you speak of these.
[15:13] Faith Diesel: there are some flowers on the carpet
    [15:13] Tindle Zepp: nice
[15:13] Faith Diesel: did you click it
[15:13] Faith Diesel: its just 2 scripts and the prims
[15:14] Faith Diesel: Fox could do something much more elaborate
[15:14] Faith Diesel: but this throw-away and quick
[15:15] Faith Diesel: if you are not builders just hand over the nc
[15:15] Faith Diesel: or ask someone who is to knock you up something
[15:16] Faith Diesel: So Claysin might give his friend a biscuit (copy of the nc) and the friend would have to call an ST in OOC group chat.
[15:16] Faith Diesel: The friend would need to copy the nc to the ST in the ST IM/conf. so that they could find the database entry. The ST would then ask the friend to rp attempting to eat the biscuits and give the eater the dice roll (This is the eaters resist to the enchantment):
[15:17] Faith Diesel: [14:22] Mr Smith barely succeeds in performing the skilled ability.
[14:22] LaRPS Sentinel: AdminMessage: Owner Joe Smith :: Mr Smith :: Msg:::::SKILLED ABILITY ROLL : Rolled 10 needed 10+ ))
[15:17] Faith Diesel: The options are Abysmal fail, failure, bare success, success & stellar success and I note-carded a possible result for all. In this case the result was a bare success:
[15:18] Faith Diesel: actually it is Critical failure - abysmal is much more descriptive though
[15:18] Faith Diesel: • Bare success
You resist going all floppy for a duration. (Roll d4 for duration. You may roll again to see if you continue to resist after that time.)
[15:19] Faith Diesel: i love bare success
[15:19] Faith Diesel: you get the success but with some disaster included or only for a duration
[15:19] Faith Diesel: Remember you do not need to add the dice rolls. The ST can do that for you.
[15:20] Faith Diesel: The aim is to have a nice spread of outcomes from critical failure to stellar success.
[15:20] Faith Diesel: If the eater succumbs to the enchantment then a duration is needed to see how long it will last.
[15:21] Faith Diesel: Stellar success & critical failure are quite rare and tend to be a little spectacular.
[15:22] Faith Diesel: Bare success, as i already said, is also interesting because there tends to be some minor success with some adverse element. In this case the eater resists for a duration and then needs to re-roll to continue resisting or not!
    [15:22] Faith Diesel: Any questions?
    [15:22] Mas Sohl: Nope
[15:22] Faith Diesel: Let me hand out XP while you think
    [15:23] Fox Onizuka: pass
[15:23] Fate: ((Pharzuph is given 1000 experience points.))
    [15:23] Tindle Zepp: nope
[15:23] Roarshack Zeplin: ugh just made it
[15:23] Mas Sohl: This I will take, first time in this class
[15:23] Faith Diesel: thats it - END OF PART 2.
    [15:23] Faith Diesel: giggles
    [15:23] Faith Diesel: sorry roar
    [15:23] Faith Diesel: just finished
[15:24] Faith Diesel: i will post it in the forum
    [15:24] Roarshack Zeplin: ok
